This is where I used to live. Blucks Island in Bermuda. We lived in the house on the left and the other occupied by the owners, Major and Mrs Kitchener. He was the nephew of Lord Kitchener of Khartoom, a lovely old couple. My dad was picked up by a naval launch every morning except when he was officer of the day, when he stayed overnight at HMS Malabar. My mom home schooled me so I became very good at French, Geography, English and History and absolute crap at maths and science!

Looks amazing CM.

Were there any other children on the island?

No just me Irene, but we did go 'ashore' about once week and sometimes I had a friend stay over.
I should add that the photo was taken  in the 1990's by an online friend, but the island has not changed much. It was once owned by W.Denslow, the artist involved in The Wizard of Oz shows.

Rudolf used to visit and stay and boy, could he eat!  My dad called him Bermuda's champion eater! He was younger than me but we had some fun together. He died about 2005 and I had only just made contact with him and my memories of those times made me think , so I wrote this for him. It wasn't the done thing then to fraternise with other colours!

The coral scars upon my hands,
Smooth patches cutting lines upon my palms,
Are witness to our childhood in the sun.
Your hands, so dark, have paler scars than mine.

Time long has passed since speckled dragon fish
Moved warily through grottos we had made
Painstakingly among the warming pools,

The while we talked of what we both should do
When we were old enough to join the world.

I wept with you when far beyond the reef,
Your father’s boat became as kindling wood.
We both threw flowers out into the sea,
Bright messengers of memory and love.

And now you look into my eyes
But neither you nor I will dare to speak,
Or join the jagged marks within our palms.

I was born in Handsworth Birmingham.  During national service, I started at West Kirby, then onto Wellesbourne Mountford, then to Cottesmore, then to Geilenkirchen Germany.  While in Germany I came home on leave and got married and rented a couple of rooms from a lovely family in Waubach Holland. We could see the Seigfried Line from our bedroom window.  We lived with my mother after demob while we saved for our first house in Perry Barr Birmingham, and moved to our present house in Burntwood in 1965.
