PostSubject: Bone density test..   Mon Oct 06, 2014 10:32 am

Seeing as we have no health section I'll post this on General discussion instead..

I've broken two bones in just over a year. My wrist last May & my ankle this July.
I'm quite worried at the ease with which they broke.
Do you think it would be appropriate for me to ask my doctor to refer me for a bone density test?

I haven't been offered one!

If you go through the testing procedures [x-rays] and it is discovered that you have some loss of density then you will be prescribed calcium tablets.
They are available at your Chemists in various flavours and cost peanuts, so that would be my advice, forget the tests and just suck a tablet once a day.

Over the years I've broken my right wrist twice, my nose, two fingers, ribs twice and my left thumb had to have a screw put in it. I don't have a very good sense of self preservation but at least I've never broken my walking gear!

A doctor can prescribe Adcal-D3. 'Er indoors has early osteoporosis and takes this. She will shortly have a six monthly injection. GO AND SEE THE DOCTOR. Do as you are told. flower flower flower

I discovered I had low bone density after breaking my hip some years ago. Not osteoporosis but getting there. So i was prescribed Adcal-D3 and Alendronic Acid, which is a pain to take but stops any further loss of bone density. I am curently on a holiday from it as it can have bad side effects that accumulate.

'ER indoors as I said takes Adcal.  She also had one lot of Alendronic acid and had a hell of a reaction to it.  She needed regular applications of Betnovate to slowly clear up a terrible itchy rash.   She is to try something different in a week or two.

Bone density is offered mostly to women after the menopause or on HRT. They run a risk of osteoporosis.

If you feel you warrant  a test just be a bit firmer with your GP. You have paid your dues  blowkiss
